CONCORD ” Since last summer, Â鶹´«Ã½ student members of the Alpha Upsilon Omicron Chapter of the national honor society Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) have been working with their Â鶹´«Ã½ chapter advisor, Trisha Dionne, and Â鶹´«Ã½ President, Dr. Gretchen Mullin-Sawicki. The Foundation for New Hampshire Community Colleges™ chair, Ed MacKay, has signed the new document establishing an endowed scholarship to ensure that future Â鶹´«Ã½ students are able to benefit for years to come.
The initial scholarship fund, raised by PTK students, awarded its first award to Holly White in the fall of 2020 and its second to Michele Kenney in the fall of 2021. The Â鶹´«Ã½ chapter, with their vision of benefiting students in perpetuity, allocated $5,000 from their reserve fund and began fundraising in hopes of raising an additional $5,000 to endow the scholarship. Recently, during the NH Gives campaign, an additional $3,800 was raised for the scholarship, and an additional $1,200 was provided by Â鶹´«Ã½™s annual fund, supported by alumni and community members, to reach the $10,000 mark needed for endowment.
This endowed fund will provide scholarship assistance to Â鶹´«Ã½ students with high academic achievement and is a Bronze Star Member of their Alpha Upsilon Omicron Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. A scholarship will be awarded in the fall and spring semesters. Applicants prepare a 500-word essay that describes the importance of the Â鶹´«Ã½ Alpha Upsilon Omicron Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa and how this chapter has impacted them.
Phi Theta Kappa recognizes the academic achievement of college students and provides opportunities for its members to grow as scholars and leaders. Established in 1918, Phi Theta Kappa has a presence on almost 1,300 community college campuses in 11 nations. The American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) recognized Phi Theta Kappa as the official honor society for two-year colleges in 1929. More than 3.5 million students have been inducted since 1918, with approximately 250,000 active members in the nation™s community colleges, making Phi Theta Kappa a true catalyst among members and colleges.
